Community - based Surveillance

The End RHD project builds on work already begun at the demonstration that has been set up at Vanguard demonstration site in Cape Town. A pilot of the screening model launched in March 2009 has successfully screened 900 children, and a purpose-built register system is being adapted from the database made available by World Heart Federation on RHDnet. It will capture all children/adults with RHD detected through the programme as well as from amongst hospital admissions.  Data on over 5,000 known cases is currently being reviewed and cleaned to prepare for entry. The End RHD work will complete this screening, analyze the data and use the protocols, tools, guidelines and training materials to "export" the model to Polokwane, Limpopo (South Africa) and Gigel Gibe (Ethiopia), also extending screening to family members of children identified with RHD.
