After completing her undergraduate degree at Stellenbosch university, Nakita came to UCT where she completed her postgraduate studies in the division of human genetics. She completed her Masters in Genetic Counselling in 2011 and completed her internship in 2013. During her internship she worked in various area’s including general genetic clinics, pregnancy counselling clinics, retinal degeneration research together with cardiology research where she first became part of the Mayosi group. She currently works part-time in the Division of Human Genetics, mainly counselling patients in various clinics, and the department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital. As part of the Mayosi group Nakita assists with cardiology research by extending and counselling known families affected by inherited cardiomyopathies as well as determining the eligibility of patients with Rheumatic heart disease for new genomic research that is going to be performed through a H3Africa funded project (RHDGen). Outside of work, Nakita enjoys exploring Cape Town, the outdoors and hiking.
